Safety by Design

It is an unfortunate fact that security measures form part of every facet of modern day life. Yet this is seldom considered at the beginning of a design project with disappointing aesthetic and financial consequences. Both are avoidable.

A professional security consultant, when included from the onset of a design project, will work in tandem with the architect to apply an environmental design approach thus retaining the openness and aesthetics of a building.

Contemporary cutting edge security components when correctly selected, combined and applied are not only far less obtrusive but also more effective in the long term. Furthermore, by “getting it right first time” costly alterations often carried out to the detriment of the overall architectural vision will be avoided.

It is important to differentiate between the professional security consultant and a salesperson/consultant. Experience has shown the use of a consultant/salesperson to be a primary reason underlying the poor design and performance of security systems. The latter will primarily be selling a specific product whereas the former is a specialised professional who “knows” the spectrum of security products and concepts. A qualified security consultant will conduct a recognised security vulnerability assessment to analyse the areas and assets in need of protection, prioritise the most important areas and then select the best technologies without prejudice.

Rapid and substantial advances in the technology of security systems make keeping up-to-date a challenge to the layman. The state of art technology is not what is important it is the design and correct application thereof which counts.

It is important that the client be equipped with unbiased information upon which to base his decisions concerning design features that prevent or mitigate crime.
